When temperatures rise, bucket hats are a stylish way to stay cool while protecting your head and neck from the sun.

Embroidery is a popular choice for decoration on bucket hats, but can be challenging due to their unique features. Depending on the equipment you have available, there are ways to make the process easier and more efficient.

Use a Magnetic Hoop

The first method incorporates a magnetic Mighty Hoop from HoopMaster. The type you need will depend on your embroidery machine—this video shows you the basic process.

Setup

• Start by hooping your piece of stabilizer.
• Pin the center of your bucket hat in the hoop. You can find the center point by folding it in half. Mark the center point with a washable marker. Line up your points to mark a center line on hat.
• Lay your hat flat and take a picture of the brim curve. You’ll use this in the next step to create a placement line for perfect results.

Artwork preparation

• Load the picture you took into your digitizing software and digitize your placement line along the edge of the brim.
• Add the decorations you want to the hat brim, and prepare to embroider.

Placement

• Stitch the placement line and remove the hoop from the machine.
• Fold the sweatband towards the brim of the hat and secure it with a pin. This will prevent it from coming into contact with the machine.
• Turn the hat right side out and pin the center bottom and top of the hat side on your hoop. Align the center line with the center of your hoop.

Time to embroider

• Fold the hat over to expose the stabilizer. Lightly use a temporary adhesive spray to spray the hat fabric to the stabilizer. Do the same for the other side.
• Place your hoop in the machine, being sure to check correct placement.
• Begin the embroidery. Watch the machine carefully to ensure the fabric is not close to the needles or your presser foot.

Use a Bucket Hat Frame

Next we’ll take a look at using a specially-designed frame for embroidering bucket hats, like this one from HoopTech. Again, make sure you get the right type of frame for your setup. Here’s a video that walks through the process.

Setup

• Set up your cap frame or gauge and place one piece of cap backing on it.
• Spray a second piece of backing lightly with adhesive and place it tacky side up on top of the first piece.
• Identify the front of the bucket hat and pull out the sweatband, if it’s loose enough to move.

Placement

• Place the hat onto the frame, aligning the front where you want the design to stitch. Avoid placing the design over vents or bulky seams.
• Pull the hat slightly to keep the fabric smooth and centered
• Press the brim sides inward so the hat sits neatly on the frame.
• Secure the hat with the strap or band, starting on one side and working across until the hat is tight and smooth with no slack or ripples.
• Double-check that the strap sits cleanly in the seam area and that the hat is clamped firmly without distorting the shape.
• If needed, mark the center line with painter’s tape so your design placement is easier to line up.

Time to embroider

• Mount the hooped hat onto the machine and rotate or latch it into place securely.
• Adjust the presser foot height based on the hat thickness, then run a trace or placement check before stitching.
• Stitch the design while watching for any shifting, especially around the brim and side seams.
• When finished, remove the hat from the machine and release it from the frame.
• Peel away the backing cleanly from the inside.
