Promotional T-Shirt Buying Habits: When Old Meets New

February 28, 2017

By now, we’re all familiar with online sites that allow consumers to create their own design, have it printed on a blank shirt and purchase or sell those items. These are great for capitalizing on quick pop-culture references and allow people to order a couple of items or a couple hundred pieces. While online sites like Vistaprint, Customink and CafePress do pose an interesting challenge for traditional promotional t-shirt sellers, recent ASI research data shows that there’s room for both types of businesses.

According to the survey, ASI found that while 49% of end-buyers have used an online t-shirt company, 48% said they work with a promotional product distributor that handles all of the logistics of t-shirt purchasing and decoration. It’s about building relationships, working directly with an expert and talking face-to-face (or phone-to-phone) with someone who has, quite literally, been there and done that.

Opportunities for online research leads to more educated and informed buyers, but many stop short of hitting the purchase button. They’ll visit a custom online t-shirt site to browse products and prices and to see how their design looks on a virtual sample. Many consumers will then take that knowledge with them to a promotional products distributor, working with an expert to finalize their project.

Stay relevant in this ever-evolving market by:

  • SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE
Customers come to promotional products distributors vs. online sites for the depth and breadth of experience you have as an expert. Don’t be afraid to share concerns or product and decoration recommendations.
  • BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
At the end of the day, people want to work with someone they like. Become a trusted advisor who can be counted upon to deliver unmatched products and services in a timely manner that exceeds expectations.
  • BEING AVAILABLE
While 24/7 access isn’t a requirement, it helps if you can quickly respond to inquiries on your website or to your customer sales email address.

While price is and always be an important consideration when purchasing t-shirts, consumers want an error-free custom product that looks great, fits and will last. If you can deliver, you’re already ahead of the game and well on your way to proving your value as a promotional products distributor.
